Next Round of Kmart Double Coupons 1/4-1/9

If you have shopped at Kmart during their previous double coupon promotions, I have good news and bad news for you. The good news is that the next round is coming up soon. It starts January 4th through January 9th. The bad news is that you can now only double coupons with a face value up to $1. In addition to that you will now only be able to double up to 25 coupons per person per day.

I am a little ambivalent about these new developments. On the one hand, it was a great perk to be able to double coupons up to $2 face value. So going down to $1 is a bit of a downer. However, there are lots of people around the country who don't have any other stores offering double coupon promotions. So even $1 double coupons is still some help. Unfortunately, Kmart's prices seem to be higher than at other stores and a lot of people have noticed prices going up since the double coupon promotion started.

Hopefully we should still be able to come up with free or cheap items after double coupons. Stay tuned, I am working on this. What do you think about Kmart's change in double coupon promotion?

Beware of After Christmas Sales

I don't know if it's just me but I have noticed that a lot of merchants are heavily promoting after Christmas sales this year. It seems they are trying to appeal to our desire to save money during this economic situation by promoting day after Christmas discounts. But don't be fooled they are still trying to get you to spend. Here are some things you may want to consider before you hit these "sales":

  • Don't get sucked in the "clearance" game. At some point or another I have fallen for this one: "what if I don't need it? It's XX% off!" Only to buy something that sits collecting dust and never gets used. Talk about a serious waste of money. So yes, maybe the item is 75% off but if you don't need it then you are just wasting your money. Think once and then think again if this item you are thinking of buying really is something you will use. If it isn't then keep your money in your pocket.
  • Hold on until the greater discounts. The truth is chances are that you may be able to find the same items that are on discount at 50% when they go on deeper discount at 75-90%. As much as I am really looking forward to shop the clearance sales (because I am, don't get me wrong), I am waiting until they hit 75% off. This is mostly because the only thing I really need is wrapping paper and I know chances are pretty good that there will still be left over when the discount is 75%.
  • Watch the register. Make sure you are getting the advertised sales discount. It can happen that a store has not marked down all of their items and even though you think you are getting a higher discount, you may be actually getting a lower one. Don't trust what a sign or sticker may say, scan items for prices if the store has price scanners or make sure the price at the register is the right one.
  • Check expiration dates: This is particularly important if you are thinking on stocking up on food that has been packaged for the holidays or food that you can only find during the holidays. Make sure to check the dates and that you get only enough to be used by that date.
  • Check return policies. Many stores don't allow returns on clearance items. Find out what the store's policy is and consider this when you purchase something.
Have fun bargain hunting but make sure you don't waste your money.

Print Shipping Labels in Paypal

This is a guest post by reader Kelly S.

Occasionally I need a trackable shipping method when I sell something over the internet to a stranger. For example, I sometimes sell books or DVDs on Amazon.com but it does not provide a shipping utility to offer proof of shipment to the buyer. How do I protect myself against a buyer claiming, rightly or wrongly, that a shipment was not received?

Delivery confirmation from the US Postal Service provides what I need, but is available only for pricey services such as Priority Mail at in-person counters or on usps.com. Redroller.com gave me delivery confirmation for a few pennies for awhile, but the site has changed to a monthly subscription plan that costs too much for my small shipping volume. PayPal charges 18 cents for delivery confirmation, but what about my transactions that don't go through PayPal?

Now I've discovered PayPal MultiOrder Shipping. This utility is intended for people who periodically ship a stack of packages to various addresses. But don't be put off: you can ship your stack of one. Delivery confirmation is included in MultiOrder shipments just as it is for a shipment of any item purchased via PayPal.

Log into PayPal and then click the MultiOrder Shipping link in the Tools menu on the left margin. A large window will open in the background. Click the Close button on the Getting Started window in the foreground. On the large background window, click the File menu and choose the Create New Orders item. The Create New Orders window will open. Expand the Ship to Address item and enter the address. Click on Save and Close to return to the background window. Use that window to specify service type, weight, and shipment date. Then print the address label, complete with delivery confirmation bar code, on plain or adhesive paper and you are done.
